Desert
Rose Cockers
Health Checks
Here at Desert Rose we screen both parents for developing
disorders as follows:
Eye exams (CERF) - performed either annually or prior to
breeding.
Hip Dysplasia /
Legg Calve Perth's (OFA) - after 2 years and/or depending
on status of sire and dam's record.
Other Tests we do
:
Thyroid
screening ( Twice during the adult dogs life)
Cardio (Twice
during the adult dogs life)
Luxated Patella
(Twice during the adult dogs life).
Vaccinations and Worming
I do not like to over-vaccinate my dogs. I am a firm believer
that over vaccination has been a big factor in some of
auto-immune and other disorders affecting dogs today. Here
is my vaccine protocol.
First puppy shot
is given at 8 weeks, followed by a second at 11 weeks, and a
third at 14 weeks. No other shots are given unless a high incidence
of Parvo has been found in the area or area's where I am
showing. The next shot will be at a year of age.
Rabies are not given until 5-6 months of age - at which time I
also recommend getting the puppy microchipped.
We de-worm all my
puppies using Nemex at 4 weeks, 5 weeks, 6 weeks, 8 weeks, and
10 weeks.
Papers
All our puppies are AKC registered.
Puppies sold as pet/companion dogs will be sold with AKC Limited
Registration.
Performance
prospects are also sold on AKC limited Registration - but with
the option of having the limited reg. lifted a later date.
Show Prospects
are sold on Full AKC Registration.
All puppies come
with a bill of sale, vaccination record, puppy owner's manual,
copy of pedigree, photo's of relatives, copies of sire and dam's
health tests, and a health guarantee.
Shipping
We do
not ship until a puppy is a min. of 10 weeks of age and
depending on airline (climate controlled cabin or not)
along with the
weather (the puppy may be held for shipping up until 12 weeks of
age).
My prices
do not include cost of health certificate required for shipping,
crate or actual airline shipping costs.
I only ship to
major airports to avoid more then one plane change in
flight. This reduces the risk of the puppy being misplaced
or left out in the elements for long periods of time - during
flight.
Feeding
I've always fed Eukanuba to my puppies as a good all around
starter food, but a few new products have come on the market
that I'm planning on checking out. If I decide to change
over, I'll update this section of the page. Until then - I
recommend Eukanuba puppy.
Guarantee's
Below is a brief
rundown of my guarantee's offered - the detailed contract of my
guarantee's will be provided along with all the other papers
when your puppy is picked up, or prior to your puppy being
shipped. If you want to review the guarantee contracts -
let me know and I can forward them to you via email.
All Puppies are sold with a 3 day health guarantee against any communicable
diseases.
An additional
guarantee for show and performance prospects only - 1 year
against
cataracts, lux.
patella's, thyroid, and heart problems considered genetic in
nature and not injury, environmentally or nutritionally related.
No other
guarantee's are offered at this time.
Socialization
Our babies are raised in doors with the house dogs, the cats and
where they can meet and greet any visitor that may come
by. When the puppies have had their first shots they are
allowed to go outdoors into the play area (weather permitting of
course). We start them off with an hour accompanied by one
of us - of playtime and gradually increase it day by day. Once
they feel comfortable with us leaving them for short periods -
we extend the time so that they learn to play without us right
by their side. But we are always close by in case
they need us. After they have received their second
vaccination we start putting them into lead training and will
take them with us to visit around town. This introduces
them to riding in the car (in mom's lap to start with) and going
to new places without the high risk of catching any communicable
diseases. We do not take them to parks (dog or human type), or
area's where other dogs may have run lose - until they have had
their third vaccination. Then we introduce them to the
noise of parks, schools, and community activities where lots of
people will be gathered. The gradual introduction to these
types of area's is suggested so not to scare the puppy into
never wanting to attend again. We like to take treats, and
toys along so the puppy learns that everyplace they go is fun
and rewarding.
Training
Training for show
starts after the third vaccination. It becomes a part of
our socialization process and once the puppy seems very
comfortable with his/her trips taken for beginning socialization
- we move into working the puppy on lead while at various
activities, on visits to parks, ect. Next we move onto
puppy handling classes. We will also take the puppy
to the shows we are currently attending and practice with the
puppy after show hours - having friends go over the puppy, check
the bite, hold and play with the puppy so that the puppy knows
that going to shows is a fun experience. Lots of treat's
and play time is the key here. : )
Performance
training is started for those puppies which are not going to be
shown in conformation classes. We do not start them
in agility but always give them the opportunity to show off
their abilities for such an activity in their play yard using
the play equipment. We normally start with basic sit,
heel, commands and work them in a basic beginners rally type of
course. I don't start them until after their third
vaccination - so that we can start working them into their
normal socialization outings.
I recommend any
buyer (show, performance or pet only) to take basic training
classes. Show buyers should enroll the puppy in handling
classes and /or puppy socialization classes shortly after you
receive the puppy. Performance buyers should enroll the
puppy in rally training or obedience classes - puppy
classes/socialization are a fine place to start as well.
And pet buyers should enroll in puppy socialization or basic
obedience classes as well. Just because a puppy is
purchased for a pet, doesn't mean you need to skip training. A
well mannered and behaved puppy makes for a joyful companion and
a happy household.
